Need to grab lunch, a drink, or just chill out near Moscone? Here are the top ten picks for passing time near the convention center.

1. Grab a Drink

Opportunities for cocktails abound near Moscone. The W Hotel lounge is a happening spot with trendy cocktails and a good wine list. The Thirsty Bear is a comfy, bustling brewery that serves authentic Spanish tapas. Jillian’s is an upscale sports bar with large-screen TVs and billiard tables.

2. Catch Some Rays

Need some fresh air after a long stint at the convention? Next door to Moscone, the pretty Yerba Buena Gardens is an oasis of grassy esplanade with lush plantings and some interesting art installations. It’s a great spot to picnic or just soak up the sun. Across the street, the newly opened SF MOMA rooftop garden boasts a coffee bar and stellar views.

3. Shop Till you Drop

Want to browse for clothes or gifts? The Westfield Center is downtown’s newest large- scale retail venue, a glittering shopping arena with its own Bloomingdale’s, H&M, upscale boutiques, and gourmet food court.

4. Take a Coffee Break

Looking for a latte between meetings? San Francisco has no shortage of great coffee places; these are among the most comfortable and stylish: The SF MOMA Cafe offers tasty biscotti and outdoor seating; Blue Bottle Coffee is a cult favorite among locals who appreciate individually brewed cups of java; Peet’s on the corner of 4th and Harrison is the place to grab a quality cup to go.

5. Visit the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SF MOMA)

The SF Museum of Modern Art houses an important collection of 20th-century paintings, photographs, and installations totaling 17,000 pieces. Works by Picasso, Matisse, Josef Albers and Alexander Calder are on view, as are pieces by distinguished California artists. There’s also a stylish café and museum store selling art and design books, modern furnishings, and artful gadgets.

Serving high-class comfort food in a sophisticated setting, Two is a great place to take clients or dine solo at the bar. Lulu is a perennial favorite specializing in wood fired oven roast meats, pizzas, and an extensive wine list. Yank Sing is one of the best Dim Sum places in town; the elegant room allows for a relaxing meal.

7. See the Asian Art Museum

The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco is one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian art, with a collection of over 17,000 pieces spanning 6,000 years of history.

8. Work the Kinks Out

Neck and shoulders hurt? Feet swollen? Book a body massage at the Burke Williams Spa, a deluxe retreat offering a range of treatments for both men and women.

9. Check out Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Galleries

Designed by Pritzker Prize winner Fumihiko Maki, this stunning aluminum clad building is worth a visit for the architecture alone. The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Galleries features rotating exhibits and performances.

10. Catch a Movie

Two of the city’s largest first-run movie complexes are just a few blocks from the convention center. The Metreon has 16 screens plus Digital 3D and Imax presentations. Within Metreon is a great bookstore and several serviceable places to grab a bite or drink. The Century San Francisco is downtown’s newest film complex, with nine screens and 3-D viewings.
