Built in 1922, the Curran Theatre remains one of the city's premiere theatrical venues.
With its 1920s architectural design, the Curran Theatre is a throwback that captivates theatergoers year-round. Along with the Orpheum Theatre and Golden Gate Theatre, the Curran hosts world premieres and hit Broadway musicals and plays as part of SHN's popular "Best of Broadway" series.
Seating up to 1,667, the theatre maintains an intimate feel. Its interior is French-inspired (box seats, crystal chandeliers) and the acoustics overall are great. Although in the balcony, the sound doesnt resonate as well and you may want to consider bringing your binoculars for a closer look at the state. (However, at about $30, balcony seats are still a good deal and on sell-out nights, the experience should prove just as memorable.)
Getting there...
Location: 445 Geary Street, between Taylor and MissionBy Muni, BART, or car. The closest garage is the Downtown Parking Garage, located around the corner at Mason and O'Farrell Streets. It's only a two-minute walk to the theatre. (If you run, one-minute.) The BART stop is at Powell Street, three short blocks away from the Curran. The Muni cable car also stops at Powell.
Seating capacity: 1,667 across three levels: Orchestra, Mezzanine, Balcony.
Did you know...
In the 1950 film All About Eve, the theater scenes weren't filmed in New York but at the Curran Theatre -- known for its resemblance to Broadway venues. It is only fitting that today it helps bring Broadway to the West Coast.Tip: The theaters rows are indeed very close together. It's a good (and recommended) idea to walk around during intermission. Just outside, you'll find the American Conservatory Theatre (A.C.T.) to your right and the Clift Hotel to your left. Cross the street and take a photo of all three, especially the Curran's famed mansard roof.
