Guide Review - Stop by for lunch, whether dining in or on the go
When we last went to Osakaya, it was a little past 1 p.m. on a Saturday and by then, much of the crowds had subsided. We got a table for three right away and were kindly given a corner booth. One thing to note is that some of the seating is close-quarters, so be careful when you're getting to your chair/seat.
But... onto the food. Here you'll find a passable selection of Japanese dishes. Noodles and rice, plus of course sushi. The portions are generous and the noodles are served in big bowls that tell you ahead of time you're getting your money's worth ($8-$12). There are also side dishes that can be ordered with rice. For instance, a bowl of steamed rice ($1) and a plate of cold tofu with Japanese garnish ($3) will run you only $4, and tea is complimentary so you don't even need to order a beverage. For a group of three, lunch can be had for about $30 and that includes the tip.
The atmosphere is casual with a friendly, attentive staff waiting to fill your cup of tea or get you another bowl of rice. The lighting is dim, with suspended lamps illuminating most of the interior. Don't worry though, you can still easily see what you've been served! One seemingly popular thing about Osakaya is the carry-out counter found just around its corner. Here, you can order a box lunch to take with you and for a very reasonable price ($6.50). When on the go, it's definitely something to consider.
