I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life. -- Abraham Lincoln
Mom's Day...
Throughout the world and history, mothers have been celebrated. As About.com's Guide to Women's History Jone Johnson Lewis tells us, mothers have been officially honored in some way since ancient times.
In the United States, the history of Mother's Day dates back to the 1800s and the efforts of Julie Ward Howe and Anna Reeves Jarvis. Though both women met with support for their separate ideas, it was actually Anna's daugther, Anna Jarvis, who had the most. After her mother passed away, she pledged to crusade the idea for the establishment of a memorial to mothers.
Milestones came in 1908 (the first service held in honor of mothers) and 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson passed a bill declaring Mother's Day a national holiday. Although Miss Jarvis ultimately became an opponent of how Mother's Day was celebrated in this country, she was indeed the person to power it to its official status. Today, Mother's Day is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May.
