Getting to Know Public Transport

From , former About.com Guide

There are two main public transportation systems in San Francisco: MUNI and BART.

Muni includes an extensive network of buses, street cars, trolleys, and cable cars; BART is the subway line that runs in one straight line through the city (you can also take BART to the airport or to the East Bay).

The basic fare for the bus, trolleys, and streetcars is $1.50 (children under four ride free); transfers are good for 90 minutes. Cable car tickets cost $5. Muni trains run until roughly midnight; buses offer limited service all night.

Muni Passports are good for unlimited rides on Muni (not BART) and are a good bet for travelers.

You can buy a 1, 3, or 7-day Passport; prices are as follows:

1-day Passport: $11
3-day Passport: $18
7-day Passport: $24

Cable cars have been a San Francisco Institution since 1873. Locals and tourists alike use these moving historic landmarks. There are three routes: two begin downtown and go north to end near Fisherman’s Wharf; the third travels east-west along California Street.

Passports, good for unlimited rides, are available as follows:

1-day: $9
3-day: $15
7-day: $20

Passports are available at various locations throughout the city. To plan your trip online, see schedules and find maps, visit the SFMTA. Visit BART for schedule and fare information on Bay Area Rapid Transport.
