Question: What's the Green Apple Music & Arts Festival?

Answer: The Green Apple Music & Arts Festival is a collaborative coast-to-coast event celebrating Earth Day. In 2008, five more cities will be joining New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco. More than 500,000 people are expected to attend the simultaneous concerts in Washington D.C., NYC, Miami, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Los Angeles, and S.F.

It has been dubbed "America's largest Earth Day celebration" and this year, its third annual, is set to be the biggest yet.

When is it?

April 18-20. In that time, in addition to the eight parks, over 150 other venues will become “Green Apple Venues” as a show of solidarity in being environmentally conscious.

For San Francisco, check out Mickey Hart & Friends, Yonder Mountain String Band, Brett Dennen, and more at Golden Gate Park's Speedway Meadow on April 20 (starting at noon).

Do I need a ticket?

Not for the Golden Gate Park performance. But for the others, such as The Waifs at The Independent or Dub Mission at the Elbo Room, yes.

Who organizes it?

The Green Apple Music & Arts Festival. Its mission is to spread green awareness through live performances and educational programs about the environment.

Kathleen Rogers, President of Earth Day Network, notes, “Our 2008 events come at a time of extraordinary, unprecedented interest in Earth Day globally. Around the world, people are recognizing that environmental problems are monumental and that the need for solutions is urgent. Individuals from all walks of life want to express their concern.”

Where is it again?

In various venues throughout the city, from Ruby Skye to The Fillmore. The free centerpiece concert is in expansive Golden Gate Park.

How is the festival green?

All the artists performing support the green cause, and the festival itself is green as can be. For one, it's "carbon neutral," meaning that the amount of fossil-fuel carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions generated will be offset to help battle back global warming. Each venue will include a section where concert-goers can learn more about being green. The T-shirts for staff, made from organic cotton. Bio-diesel generators are used where possible and recycling and reuse efforts are practiced throughout. Public transportation is very much encouraged.

Happy Earth Day!
