From January 21, 2006 through May 30, 2006, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will be presenting the special exhibition
1906 Earthquake: A Disaster in Pictures to commemorate the centennial of the 1906 earthquake and fire.
On April 18, 1906, a massive earthquake hit San Francisco and literally reduced most of the city's structure to rubble, setting it on a rebuilding effort that saw it re-focus, expand and
rise up again.
As you can see from the photograph above, the city was devastated. In this exhibition, view photographs from professionals and amateurs alike. Thanks to these irreplaceable views, we today are provided a window into the past and to this disaster, which defined San Francisco: before, during, and after the quake.
