Neighborhood Overview: North Beach...

Sunday September 2, 2007
Next year, Coit Tower will celebrate its 75th anniversary. Built at the bequest of Lillie Hitchcock Coit, the 210-foot , unpainted structure of reinforced concrete has been a somewhat polarizing landmark, with people either admiring it or thinking it odd. But, nonetheless, it’s indeliby part of San Francisco’s landscape and its 75 years will be honored in good measure.

Visitors to the tower can take in amazing views of the Bay and city - as well as an art tour. On the tower's first floor, you'll find various murals depicting: “Aspects of Life in California, 1934”. On Saturdays (at 11 a.m.), San Francisco City Guides leads tours of the tower, plus has access to the spiral stairway and its murals... To reach North Beach's Coit Tower, take Muni. Bus 39 departs from Washington Square Park every 20 minutes!

  • Tomorrow: Pacific Heights
